Rovi to Drive Personalized Entertainment Discovery for Leading Nordic Service Provider

SANTA CLARA, Calif. & AMSTERDAM--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- IBC—Rovi Corporation (NASDAQ:ROVI) today announced Canal Digital Kabel, a leading cable TV provider serving approximately half a million cable and FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) households in Norway, plans to standardize on Rovi Search and Recommendations Services for its “T-We” entertainment portal. The agreement marks the first European win for Rovi services based on the combination of Rovi and recently acquired Veveo technologies. Rovi’s intuitive and predictive search and recommendations capabilities will play an important role in making it easy for subscribers to quickly discover entertainment they’ll enjoy from Canal Digital Kabel’s extensive video-on-demand (VOD) catalog. Rovi will be showcasing Search and Recommendations Services at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) at Hall 5, Stand A31. IBC takes place in Amsterdam, September 12-16.

“By teaming with Rovi, we will be able to deliver a next-generation discovery experience that will delight our subscribers and help increase overall service engagement and satisfaction,” said Oystein Joar Holte, Head of Product Development, Canal Digital Kabel. “Rovi offers a robust search and recommendations technologies that we believe will serve our needs today and into the future as we continue to execute our strategy of providing consumers with easy-to-use services for finding, accessing and enjoying the content they want, where and when they wish.”

Using Rovi services, T-We subscribers will be able to search for movies of interest and receive relevant recommendations for content similar to titles previously enjoyed or featuring their favorite actor or director. They can also browse using a range of categories or themes such as children’s films, most viewed, Oscar nominated or superheroes.

“We’re pleased by this early win in Europe and proud to be supporting Canal Digital Kabel’s leading-edge services and offering them unified search and recommendations capabilities that are able to scale to meet their evolving needs,” said Murali Aravamudan, senior vice president, Discovery, Rovi. “Rovi services are designed to enable entertainment experiences that are tailored to the tastes of the individual consumer, helping promote increased content consumption and average-revenue-per-user rates.”

The predictive prowess of Rovi Search and Recommendations Services is achieved through analysis of viewing behaviors and preferences, and a deep understanding of entertainment within a real-world context. Unlike traditional search and recommendations services, Rovi combines its entertainment metadata handcrafted by a team of professional Rovi editors with a dynamic Knowledge Graph that maintains semantic, real-time information on more than 100 million entertainment-related entities (i.e., program titles, celebrity names, brands, locations and other relevant elements). This blend enables Rovi to anticipate what a user wants next by applying a range of contextual relevance filters that take into consideration the time of day, day of week and location. The system can also account for market trends by tracking the importance and popularity of people and entertainment, as well as the relationships between them, at any given moment.
